Once again, talented students from the jazz department at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance will perform at London’s famous jazz venue. Trinity Laban Contemporary Jazz Ensemble is emerging as one of the country’s most exciting young jazz groups.  The ensemble received fantastic reviews for their concerts at the London Jazz Festival in November, when they were joined by special guest Oren Marshall on Tuba.

The ensemble will perform music by Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and other composers associated with the Village Vanguard, directed by Malcolm Earle-Smith.

Mark Lockheart will also lead a set paying tribute to Gil Evans, exploring the experimental sounds of the 70s and 80s. You’ll hear an exploration for the electric repertoire, including tracks from Svengali and Plays Jimi Hendrix.

Trinity Laban Jazz students to wow at Ronnie Scott’s

Two different ensembles made up of Trinity Laban’s talented jazz students will perform at London’s famous jazz venue, Ronnie Scott’s, on Monday 11 February.

The Trinity Laban Jazz Ensemble, directed by Malcolm Earle-Smith, will lead off with pieces by Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and other composers associated with the Village Vanguard.

Last year’s performance attracted rave reviews –

“Trinity Laban is steeped in big band tradition....arrangements of Fletcher Henderson and Benny Carter were played (by Trinity Jazz Ensemble) with panache"

London Jazz Blogspot 2012

Special guest Oren Marshall, who critics call “…the Jimi Hendrix of the tuba…” will then join the Trinity Laban Contemporary Jazz Ensemble to perform material by Gil Evans, including tracks from Gil’s celebrated albums Svengali and Plays Jimi Hendrix.

The Contemporary Jazz Ensemble is one of the country’s most exciting young jazz groups, receiving fantastic reviews of their concerts at the London Jazz Festival in November.

“A surefooted and enthusiastic group of students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire [of Music and Dance]…were a credit to the players and their director, especially when Lockheart shrewdly let his young charges rock out in an extended jam on Evans’ exultant arrangement of Jimi Hendrix’s Little Wing.” (John Fordham, Guardian)
