In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s west end where local musicians could jam. Today, it is one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs attracting packed houses and the biggest names in jazz and popular music and Ronnie Scott’s welcoming, stylish setting is also home to London’s coolest late night hang.
Each night Monday to Saturday, after the main act, Ronnie Scott’s presents the Late Late Show, where some of the UK’s finest jazz talents take to the stage for a late night blowing session.
Artie Zaitz is a scholarship recipient at Trinity College of Music.
Coming from a family of musicians he was exposed to the sounds of jazz from an early age. Artie developed a particular interest in recordings from the Blue Note label which has a profound influence on the current material performed with his quartet.
Artie’s guitar influences include Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall, John Scofield and Charlie Christian. He is also inspired by composers such as Grachan Moncur III, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, Paul Motian, Eddie Harris and Miles Davis.
The ‘Scope’ Quartet is formed specifically with the vibraphone in mind, since it is Artie’s harmonic instrument of choice for accompaniment. With ‘Scope’ being another take on Thelonious Monk’s middle name “Sphere”, the quartet draws primarily from Monk’s music as a platform for original composition and extended improvisation.
