King Salsa was founded by master Percussionist/Drummer Robin Jones in England in 1986. In its 20 or so years the band has had a colourful and varied career and has become something of an international institution in Latin (mainly Cuban) music, dance and folklore. King Salsa has been featured at most of the world's best jazz and Latin venues and festivals including sell-outs at the legendary Ronnie Scott's club in London, the Brecon Jazz Festival, Marlborough Jazz Festival, Malta, Pori and alongside Irakere at London's Cabot Hall.
The personnel have always been drawn from the top current group of crack young players internationally, and have also backed many of the world’s greats in Latin and Latin Jazz. Many great players and singers have graced the band’s ranks, many of whom have become Band Leaders in their own right, and who often make return appearances. These include master percussionist Bosco De Oliveira (now resident in Brazil but still comes to play with the band on occasion), trumpet virtuosos Steve Waterman, Mark Armstrong and Graeme Flowers, trombone legends Dennis Rollins and Paul Shepherd, the inimitable violin of Omar Puente and multi-instrumental star Gerry Hunt.
The current line-up features a range of ferocious new talents; The trumpet section features the world class lead trumpets of Jean Paul Gervasoni, Alex Maynard and the section and jazz solos of Gavin Broom. The piano is under the capable digits of the amazing Chris Kibble. The bass chair features Jonny Gee, an ever-present figure on the UK jazz and Latin scenes. The timbales are in the hands of Marc Cecil who is becoming one of the most sought after Drummers/Percussionists on the scene. Virtuoso tenor, baritone sax and flute man is Jamie Harris and new trombone star and Musical Director is Tim Smart. Alongside Robin, the percussion section is spearheaded by master percussionist/vocalist Carlos Fuentes (from Chile). Add to this the charismatic lead vocals and percussion of Enrique Bringas (from Cuba) and Juan Pablo Lopez (from Colombia), and you have it. Robin himself has had a vastly experienced career, playing with most of the world’s greats of Latin, jazz and pop including Stan Getz, Phil Woods and Latin Jazz piano great Charlie Palmeiri. More recently he has been seen with trumpet greats Eddie Henderson and Arturo Sandoval.
The band has recently released a breathtaking new album, entitled 'Sabroso Mambo'. Available through Weave Records, all good record stores, iTunes and CD Baby, it is one of the most exciting Latin albums produced in recent years.
The band also has two previous CDs 'Aché' and 'Chango'.
