In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s west end where local musicians could jam. Today, it is one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs attracting packed houses and the biggest names in jazz and popular music and Ronnie Scott’s welcoming, stylish setting is also home to London’s coolest late night hang.
Each night Monday to Saturday, after the main act, Ronnie Scott’s presents the Late Late Show, where some of the UK’s finest jazz talents take to the stage for a late night blowing session.
Jazz pianist/composer Kate Williams was born in London into a musical family (her father is the guitarist John Williams, her mother a classical pianist). A recipient of the John Dankworth Award For Talent Deserving Wider Recognition, she has gained a distinctive reputation as both a writer and performer.
She has released several CDs, each one to critical acclaim. Her most recent one being 'Smoke And Mirrors', a live duo recording with award-winning Scottish tenorist Bobby Wellins. "The opening bars of "Smoke And Mirrors," one of three jointly composed tunes on the album, set the standard: languid, relaxed interplay between tenor saxophone and piano that has the effortless ease that can only come from players in total command of their craft." (Bruce Lindsay, All About Jazz)
In 2011, she recorded with her new septet featuring Gareth Lockrane, Steve Fishwick, Ben Somers, Julian Siegel, Jeremy Brown, Oli Hayhurst, and Tristan Mailliot. 'Made Up' was released in October 2011, and was ranked 7th in Mojo's top jazz albums of 2011. The septet was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Award in March 2012.
She has also performed with many of the UK’s leading musicians, including Stan Sulzmann, Nikki Iles, John Etheridge, Anita Wardell, Georgia Mancio, Dave Cliff, Tony Woods, Tim Whitehead, Julian Siegel, Karen Sharpe, Allison Neale, and is a member of Chris Biscoe's Mingus Moves. Kate currently teaches on the jazz degree course at Middlesex University.
