In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s west end where local musicians could jam. Today, it is one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs attracting packed houses and the biggest names in jazz and popular music and Ronnie Scott’s welcoming, stylish setting is also home to London’s coolest late night hang.

Each night Monday to Saturday, after the main act, Ronnie Scott’s presents the Late Late Show, where some of the UK’s finest jazz talents take to the stage for a late night blowing session.

Lorraine Baker

"I had a wonderful time playing with Lorraine Baker while recently in London. She swings hard and plays in a style deeply rooted in the tradition of the great drummers of jazz. " Gary Smulyan

Lorraine took up the drums at the age of 12, and soon after gained the chair in a locally respected swing band. She took on many professional engagements as a drummer and classical percussionist whilst still at school. Graduating from Trinity College of Music with First Class Honours, she has been mentored by many top international musicians including Dave Holland, Gene Calderazzo and Phil Robson (Partisans). She has played at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Tokyo Opera House, Isle of Wight Jazz Festival, Big Sky Jazz Festival, the Vortex Jazz Club, Queen Elizabeth Hall amongst may more, as well as recording for BBC Radio One’s “Live Lounge” and BBC Radio Four. She is a former ambassador for the National Youth Jazz Collective.

Lorraine has reformed her trio this year to explore a classic, deep-rooted feel, paying tribute to the legendary players that shape her sound today. Her touch on the drum kit has been described as “second to none,” and her debut at Ronnie Scotts is one not to be missed. Featuring special guest Jonny Griffiths on alto saxophone.

Jonny Griffiths

Leaving his hometown of Hayling Island to study in London in 2005, Jonny Griffiths has gradually been making a name for himself on the UK’s jazz scene as a fine Saxophonist and improviser of considerable taste and artistry.  He has already performed at some of London’s most famous venues including Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Soho and Camden’s Jazz Cafe.

Jonny graduated with a Masters Degree from Trinity College of Music in 2010 and currently holds a teaching position at Middlesex University where he graduated with 1st class honours in 2008.  Even at this early stage in his professional career, he has performed on some of the world’s biggest stages including the 2011 Vienne jazz festival, the 2010 World Expo festival in Shanghai, 2009’s North Sea jazz festival in Rotterdam, recording radio sessions at Maida Vale studios for BBC Radio 2 and for BBC television.  Jonny also holds the lead alto chair with two of London’s finest large jazz ensembles, the Matt Roberts Big Band and the Stuart Fowler Jazz Orchestra as well as occasionally appearing with the likes of the London jazz Ensemble and the Skinner/Skelton All Stars.

In contrast to large ensemble playing, Jonny runs his own quartet for which he writes and arranges and is building experience playing Saxophones, Flute and Clarinet in other commercial settings in the studio as well as venues throughout the UK.
