Recently named the #1 Rising Star Trombonist in Downbeat’s annual critics poll and hailed by the New York Times as “a young trombonist of vision and composure”, few musicians have managed to navigate the richly varied avenues of New York City’s abundant music scene with the same passion and adaptability as trombonist and composer Ryan Keberle. Since moving to New York City from Spokane in 1999, Keberle’s diverse talents have earned him a place alongside a staggering array of legends, superstars, and up-and-coming innovators including David Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, Alicia Keys, Maria Schneider, and Sufjan Stevens.
Keberle combines that wealth of influence and experience into a bold group sound with his band, Catharsis. Described by the Los Angeles Times as “a potent blend of cinematic sweep and lush, ear-grabbing melodies” Catharsis brings together elements of chamber music, South American folk, indie rock, within a traditional jazz framework to form a unique sound of “indie jazz” that has thrilled audiences around the world the past 6 years. For this performance only, the band will feature an all-star lineup made up of fellow Darcy James Argue Secret Society conspirators. With recent performances on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series, Voice of America’s Beyond Category, tours throughout the United States and Europe including performances at such notable venues like Jazz at Lincoln Center in NYC, Blue Whale in Los Angeles, Duc de Lombard in Paris, and the Toronto and Ottawa Jazz Festivals, Keberle’s music has mesmerized critics and fans around the world. Repertoire will be selected from Keberle’s most recent record release on Greenleaf Music, Find the Common, Shine a Light, a protest album that has received rave reviews from critics worldwide. His last album, Azul Infinito, was listed as one of “5 jazz albums you need to hear” by Billboard magazine. The band members of Catharsis bring an impressive wealth of experience playing an integral role in many of the top jazz and Latin jazz ensembles including the bands of Becca Stevens, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Darcy James Argue and Maria Schneider.
