£12.50 - £22.50
This concert is part of the 'Jazzwise to the Power of 15' festival, helping celebrate 15 years of Jazzwise Magazine
In a special commission for this concert the highly acclaimed, power-house, jazz-electronica trio, TROYKA, are partnered with the stunning Royal Academy of Music Big Band to form the TROYK-ESTRA. The music is compelling and captures your imagination from start to finish - fuelled by textural guitar loops, displaced drum grooves, big band brass and an evocative lyricism that is utterly absorbing. TROYKA's Chris Montague, Kit Downes and Josh Blackmore have arranged music from their debut self titled release in 2009, and brand new material from their highly anticipated second release (scheduled for June 2012 on Edition records). TROYKA's unique approach is given a new slant with the incredible Royal Academy of Music big band, featuring some of the UK's most gifted young performers, under the direction of the Academy's Head of Jazz, Nick Smart.
“A fascinating conjunction of dance-derived beats, abstract electronica, ambient music, Schofield-like guitar funk, and John Zorn-ish free-iazz.” Guardian Film & Music
“Mingus-meets-Motorhead melange of garage rock, improvised jazz, metronomic beats and extreme volume.” Independent ****
Cerebral without being self-consciously playful without seeming glib, this fine debut is simply
bursting with intelligence and wit. Jazzwise ****
